There are six classes, as detailed below. These classes are based around the exercises required for the same level of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Tests

Foundation

The structure of this class is based on the exercises laid down in The Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme Puppy Foundation Course, and includes items such as:

Those handlers whose dogs are over the age to receive an award under The Kennel Club scheme (12 months at completion of the course) will receive a Findon Downs Dog Training Club Foundation Course Certificate on successful completion of all parts of the course.

Progress out of this class is determined by the instructors' opinions at their regular instructors' meetings.
NB: You do not need to take a test in this class!

This is the top class, and is for dogs who have mastered basic obedience and whose owners would like to further their training. Some members take part regularly in obedience competitions whilst others are not interested in competing but enjoy teaching their dogs new skills in the company of like minded doggy people !

End of Term Test Details

In addition to the Good Citizen Tests, we also hold Obedience Tests, for anyone who expresses an interest and aptitude, by Instructor's invitation only. These are held at the end of each term.

Food shall not be carried (except in PreBeginners) or given to a dog under test. The exercises required for the End of Term tests are as follows:

Pre-Beginner
Rosettes to sixth place
Heel on Lead
Recall with Finish
Sit Stay - 30 seconds
Down Stay - 1 minute
Additional Info: Extra commands are permitted, except in the stay exercises. A tight lead and any handling of the dog will be penalised. Food or a toy may be carried, but not given to the dog until the entire test (prior to stays) is completed.

Beginner
Rosettes to sixth place

Recall with Finish
Retrieve any article with Finish
Sit Stay - 1 minute
Down Stay - 1.5 minutes
Additional Info: As above, and the dog should stay in the heel position during Heel Free. On retrieve, the dog should return and present the article to the handler who should take it on the steward's command.

Novice

Retrieve a Dumbbell with Finish
Sit Stay - 1 minute
Down Stay - 2 minutes

Scent Discrimination - handlers scent, 5 blanks, no decoys, in a straight line

'B'
Rosettes to fourth place
Heel Free - at normal, fast and slow pace. Each change of pace shall commence from the halt position.
Sendaway, Drop and Recall to heel
Retrieve judge's article
Sit Stay - 2 minutes, out of sight
Down Stay - 3 minutes, out of sight
Scent Discrimination - The handler’s scent on a marked cloth supplied by the Judge. There must be a minimum of 6 and up to a maximum of 10 scent cloths, the total must include one decoy cloth, and the cloth provided by the Judge. The pattern of cloths is at the Judge’s discretion.
Additional Info: As above, but extra commands or signals in any exercise will be penalised.

'C'
Rosettes to fourth place
Heel Free - at normal, fast and slow pace. At some time during this test, at the discretion of the Judge, the dog shall be required, whilst walking at heel at normal pace, to be left at the Stand, Sit and Down position in any order as and when directed by the Judge. The handler shall continue forward alone without hesitation, and continue as directed by the Judge until reaching the dog when both shall continue forward together until halted.

Sit Stay - 2 minutes, out of sight
Down Stay - 6 minutes, out of sight

Fees

There is a membership fee for joining Findon Downs Dog Training Club. This currently stands at £6.00 per annum. The membership year runs from January 1st to December 31st.

The fees for each term (as at January 2006) are £20.00 for all classes; and the fee is payable on the first night of each term.
